Tallahassee resident, Jeremy Cohen, with his family

“To know it is to love it” is a common sentiment among Betton Hills residents. Once people get into the neighborhood, they rarely leave. This is one of the few communities that seems to have timeless appeal. Retirees love how close it is to Tallahassee Memorial HealthCare and the medical district. Whereas young families appreciate the large lots that can accommodate play sets, as well as the parks located within this Tallahassee neighborhood. Here’s what one local resident has to say:

After living in Betton Hills for almost 10 years we were outgrowing our old house, so we decided to make a big move… a half a mile away. We couldn’t imagine living anywhere else. We love Betton’s trees, the neighborhood parks, the easy streets for running & biking and so many friendly neighbors. Our kids are happy in our neighborhood schools, and the in-town location allows us to get anywhere in just a few minutes.”

For those looking for Tallahassee neighborhoods with history, look no further than the Frenchtown community. The neighborhood got its start in 1825. After the Civil War, many emancipated slaves moved to the area, settling in Frenchtown. Students attended Lincoln Academy and Frenchtown grew into a lively community.

Today, residents enjoy art walks, hosted by the Ash Gallery on Georgia Street, as well as the community garden and weekly farmers market. The neighborhood’s close proximity to downtown is also desirable, as residents can be at the Florida State Capitol and other office locations in just minutes.

Cloisters of All Saints

Cloisters at All Saints Neighborhood in Tallahassee, FL
Cloisters of All Saints neighborhood

One of the unique aspects about living in Tallahassee is the southern charm it retains, which is often reflected in the architecture of the buildings around the city. Cloisters of All Saints is the perfect example. This condominium development would look just as fitting in Charleston, Savannah or the French Quarter in New Orleans as it does in Florida’s capital city.

And when you get inside, you’ll fall in love! 10-foot ceilings, stainless appliances and 2nd-floor balconies are what keep residents at Cloisters. Plus, residents love that it’s walking distance to, well… EVERYTHING. From your doorstep you can be at the Florida State Capitol, Florida State University, Florida A&M University or the Leon County Civic Center.

Because of its central location, there are plenty of bars, restaurants and art galleries nearby. Fermentation Lounge, All Saints Cafe and Railroad Square are popular hangout spots for local residents, especially on a Friday night when there’s live music around every corner.

Killearn Estates

Killearn Estates

Although locals often say “Killearn” in a generic sense, there are 3 distinct neighborhoods located in the Killearn area: Killearn Estates, Killearn Acres, and Killearn Lakes.

Killearn Estates was the first neighborhood in Tallahassee that used underground utilities, which means no telephone wires to impede the views. To this day, residents love unimpeded views of majestic oaks and crystal clear lakes, without a phone pole in sight!

Killearn Lakes

Here’s what resident Joe Barnett has to say about his neighborhood:

“We love Killearn Lakes. When you enter it, people think it is a state park. Residents are encouraged to leave their yard trees like a forest to help wildlife and reduce storm water and mowing air and noise  pollution.

There is a great greenway hiking trail and lakes! We have a “Killearn lakes friendly yards” program too.”

Los Robles

Los Robles neighborhood in Tallahassee
Los Robles

Los Robles is a historic neighborhood in the heart of Tallahassee. It’s charm and easy access to midtown and downtown make homes in the area highly sought after. The moss covered oaks and rolling hills makes walking or biking a scenic pastime. Residents also enjoy the Los Robles community park that is around the corner from the neighborhood and is the perfect spot for summer afternoons with your family.

Summerlake

“When I first graduated college, I rented a townhouse in Summerlake, mostly because it was close to everything – FSU for football games in the fall, my job, and Midtown, which is where I meet my friends for drinks after work. But that’s not the only reason I love it. Every time we have friends come to visit they say ‘I didn’t even know this was back here!’ and it’s true – Summerlake is a hidden gem.

My wife and I liked it so much, we ended up buying a lot in the neighborhood and building a house on the lake. My wife’s not from here and what she appreciates most are the sidewalks, (which they don’t have in every neighborhood) since she’s a runner.

Because the neighborhood isn’t huge, you really get the opportunity to know your neighbors. Across the street, there’s a family that runs Pho Vietnamese restaurant. The owner of Tremont Concrete Construction is right down the way. As a small business owner myself, I appreciate that aspect of our neighborhood.”

Woodland Place

Woodland Place neighborhood in Tallahassee
Woodland Place

Woodland Place proves once again that functionality is more important than square footage. Popular among newlyweds and retirees, the homes in this Tallahassee neighborhood are super affordable, while including many of the upgrades that typically cost you thousands of dollars more, like energy efficiency, granite countertops, tile showers and hardwood floors.

This smaller neighborhood community is filled with walkers, runners and strollers, in part because sidewalks were built throughout the neighborhood. But there’s even more right outside your door, because Woodland Place is near Tom Brown Park and the Lafayette Heritage Trail Park, so you can lace up and get going.

Centerville Conservation

Centerville Conservation new construction neighborhood in Tallahassee
Centerville Conservation

Centerville Conservation is a community that exudes charm. From southern craftsman-style homes, an abundance of wildlife (like deer) roaming freely, and wide open spaces between you and your neighbors there are plenty of reasons to call this community home. There are 5 distinct neighborhoods that make up the Conservation; Oak Grove, Savannah, Forest Reserve, Lakefront and Meadows. While homes in these neighborhoods are fairly spread out you’ll find that there is still a strong friendly neighborhood connection.

Nature enthusiasts love the Centerville Conservation community for its tranquil atmosphere, endless outdoor exploration opportunities and strong ethics in regards to conservation practices. These values are in place to protect the local wildlife and plants in the Red Hills region.

SouthWood

“If there is one word I would choose to describe Southwood Tallahassee, it’s “community.” Since the first day I moved to Southwood, I always felt like more than just a resident of a beautiful neighborhood, I felt like a member of an expansive, inclusive and fun community.

We try to take advantage of enjoying everything here! We love exploring the nature trails that intertwine throughout the neighborhood, and we love taking long walks or runs around the Central Park lake (where everyone smiles at each other as they pass by). The pool and its features are fantastic and I hope one day my daughter realizes how lucky she is to grow up with a miniature water park to play in every day. Speaking of activities for kids, the neighborhood park is also so perfect for kids of all ages ~ and the best part is that we can just walk there.

There’s also plenty for adults. We’re talking 4th of July fireworks, Halloween Party, Pool Parties/Movie Nights at the Pool, Christmas Tree Lighting, Christmas Party, bi-annual community garage sales and so much more. It is because of all of these aspects and more that my family and I absolutely love living in Southwood.”

Summer Gonzalez-Mendez

Summerbrooke

When Gary Bartlett was asked why he loves Summerbrooke, this was his reply: “It’s just very easy to live here. “It’s comfortable, it’s safe, you know your neighbors … It’s fun to live here.” Fun is definitely at your fingertips when it comes to living in Summerbrooke. Almost every home has a golf course view, waterfront view, or a pool. Other reasons residents say they love the neighborhood is for its privacy, safety, and architectural appeal. Plus it’s family-oriented. With grade-A school zones, you’ll never want to leave your neck of the woods.

Lakeshore

Views of Lake Jackson from Lakeshore neighborhood

Lakeshore is a close-in area that is actually a collection of neighborhoods, each with its own vibe. It is eponymous with the winding southern shoreline of the city’s largest lake, Lake Jackson.  To me, there is no better drive than the four miles of Lakeshore, when the dogwoods and azaleas bloom in early spring. However, no matter what time of year it is, I can see magnolias, moss covered oaks, and 100 foot pines.

What I love about my home is that I feel like a world away when I’m on the dock in my backyard, surrounded by wildlife. Close to universities, downtown, and I-10, you rarely get ensnarled like those in new neighborhoods with slow 15 mile commutes from the northeast. And, yes, as I write I am watching a sublime sunset over the mountains (Indian mounds!), no kidding.”

We love living in Midtown because it is convenient to EVERYTHING! Plus, many of Midtown’s neighborhoods are historic, so there’s a great mix of architectural styles and loads of charm! Gorgeous, mature landscaping and trees, wonderful parks, and fabulous shops, restaurants and amenities make Midtown a top choice for residents seeking an alternative to “cookie cutter” developments.
