We are starting a four-part series called Get to Know the Local Community, where we will highlight many of the things Tallahassee residents love about the area they live in. First, we’ll take a look at Northeast Tallahassee.

  1. Canopy Road Cafe. With multiple locations in Tallahassee, it’s the perfect brunch spot for the entire family. This Florida-based restaurant encompasses the American-style diner but with some fun twists!
  2. Café de Martín. This Peruvian restaurant features dishes such as Papas en salsa Huancaina, Pastel de Choclo, and Aji de Gallina. Chef Martín seeks to expand Tallhassee’s taste palette with Latin-American-inspired flavors. 
  3. Mom and Dad’s Italian Restaurant. Located in Bannerman Crossings, this regionally-inspired Italian restaurant has been serving Tallahassee since 1963.

Parks

  1. Alfred B. Maclay Gardens. These gardens are the definition of picture-perfect, with remarkable brick walkways, a secret garden, a reflection pool, and a walled garden.  It’s also home to Lake Hall, where you can take a boat ride across the rippling waters or have a picnic on the shores. 
  2. Tom Brown Park. This park is perfect for anyone who enjoys a good outdoor adventure. It’s known for its diverse hiking and biking trails, BMX tracks, baseball and softball fields, and tennis courts. The playground area is great for kids of all ages and is only a short walk from the local dog park. Each year, Tom Brown also hosts a 4th of July event with fireworks and food trucks!
  3. Winthrop Park. This 13-acre park contains softball and baseball fields, soccer fields, tennis courts, a shaded playground, several rose gardens, and plenty of green space.
  4. Chittenden Park. This small park is ideal for peaceful reflection or a relaxing walk, with serene rose gardens, benches, and quiet areas.

Piney Z

Piney-Z is one of Northeast Tallahassee’s more affordable neighborhoods, with many homes priced under $320k. This neighborhood has numerous common areas for the entire community’s convenience, including a lodge, fitness center, pavilion, gazebo, and playground. One of the neighborhood’s many benefits is its proximity to Tom Brown Park and Lafayette Heritage Park Trail, which is home to Piney Z’s own lake where you can go kayaking, canoeing, fishing, or wildlife watching.

Betton Hills, located between Thomasville and Centerville Roads, is one of Tallahassee’s oldest neighborhoods. Although it is one of the smaller neighborhoods in the northeast, it has many positive aspects that make it an ideal place to live. The homes in this area are recognized for being both luxurious and timeless. The homeowners association, one of the most involved in the city, ensures that it always maintains the neighborhood in a well-manicured state. Another significant advantage of living in Buckhead is the close proximity to nearby lakes and ponds. Lake Killarney, a 154-acre body of water with surrounding picnic tables and a fishing pier, is only a 6-minute drive away. In this lake, you’ll find Catfish, bream/bluegill, bowfin, warmouth, and crappie.

Killearn (Estates, Lakes, and Acres)

This neighborhood is located in the upper Northeast and comprises 3 distinct subdivisions, each with its own unique sense of place. Killearn Estates (left) spreads out across more than 4,000 acres and offers a variety of housing options, including apartments, condos, and townhomes. Another beneficial amenity is the Killearn Estates Country Club, which is currently closed for renovations but you can follow the progress on their website.

Residents revere Killearn Lakes (middle) for its gorgeous canopy roads and lush landscape. They also have access to the community pool, tennis courts, and Tequesta Park, where they hold local events such as ‘Movies in the Park’. It contains 10 smaller neighborhoods such as Deerfield Plantation, Deerwood Plantation, Killearn Commons, Kinhega Landing, Pine Landing, Seven Oaks, and Windsor Palm.

Killearn Acres (right) is another popular neighborhood among Tallahassee residents, particularly retirees who appreciate the abundance of one-story homes in the area. There are also several neighborhood parks that are only accessible to residents and are great for children of all ages.

Golden Eagle features some of the most expensive and luxurious homes in the city. However, if the more expensive homes are out of your price range but you still want access to all of the great amenities, The Landing at Golden Eagle, its sister neighborhood, has more affordable homes. With its renowned golf course designed by Tom Fazio, gorgeous oak trees, crystal clear lake, and well-kept tennis courts, it’s easy to see why Golden Eagle is one of the city’s most appealing neighborhoods. This gated community has everything you need, including access to the Golden Eagle Country Club and Lake Diane, among other natural treasures.
