Panah Panahi, son and collaborator of embattled filmmaker Jafar Panahi and apprentice to Iranian master Abbas Kiarostami makes a striking feature debut with this charming, sharp-witted, and deeply moving comic drama. "Hit the Road" takes the tradition of the Iranian road-trip movie and adds unexpected twists and turns. It follows a family of four – two middle-aged parents and their sons, one a taciturn adult, the other an ebullient six-year-old – as they drive across the Iranian countryside. Over the course of the trip, they bond over memories of the past, grapple with fears of the unknown, and fuss over their sick dog. Unspoken tensions arise and the film builds emotional momentum as it slowly reveals the furtive purpose for their journey. The result is a humanist drama that offers an authentic, often comedic, and deeply sincere observation of an Iranian family preparing to part with one of their own.

The Book Keepers follows the uplifting journey of a husband who keeps his wife's dream alive by becoming the spokesperson for her book after her death.
Carol Wall's debut memoir – about cancer, friendship, and cultivating an open heart – was a breakout success. But joy turned to tragedy when the breast cancer she wrote about returned, and she died months after its publication.
Carol’s husband, Dick, determined to help her life-affirming message find its audience, becomes the book’s unlikely spokesperson and embarks on a nationwide book tour. He’s joined by the couple’s filmmaker son, Phil, who captures his dad’s efforts to ensure her dream lives on. The result is an intimate portrait of love and loss – an ode to the healing power of storytelling.

A poetic blending of the personal and political, "Skies of Lebanon" combines live action with animation to create a vivid picture of Lebanon, inspired by the family history of filmmaker Chloé Mazlo. Using stories told to her by her grandmother of life during the Lebanese Civil War, Mazlo crafts a touching and heartbreaking story of love during wartime. Alba Rohrwacher (Happy as Lazzaro) plays Alice, a Swiss woman who moved to Beirut in the 1950s and falls in love with a Lebanese man. Wajdi Mouawad (author of the playIncendies, which was the source material for Denis Villeneuve’s 2010 film) plays Joseph, an astrophysicist with dreams of sending his fellow citizens into space, and the object of Alice's affection. Joseph and Alice appear to lead the perfect life until their bliss is ripped apart by the civil war and nothing will be the same again. An official selection for the 2020 Cannes International Critics’ Week, "Skies of Lebanon" stunningly gives shape to the emotional undercurrents felt by the characters through the use of animation. This rewarding and quietly devastating cinematic experience announces Mazlo’s arrival as an important new talent.

"Costa Brava, Lebanon" captures the joys and frustrations of a close-knit family with an intimacy that feels startlingly natural, and sets them against a sharply drawn backdrop of environmental crisis. In the not-so-distant future, the free-spirited Badri family have escaped the toxic pollution and social unrest of Beirut by seeking refuge in an idyllic mountain home. Without warning, the government starts to build a garbage landfill right outside their fence, intruding on their domestic utopia and bringing the trash and corruption of a whole country to their doorstep. As the landfill rises, so does tension in the household, revealing a long-simmering division between those family members who wish to defend or abandon the mountain oasis they have built. Mounia Akl’s stunning feature debut premiered at Venice and won major prizes at the Toronto and BFI London Film Festivals. Her unique gift with actors is evident in the sensitively realized performances she elicits from her cast, which includes award-winning filmmaker Nadine Labaki (Capernaum) and celebrated actor Saleh Bakri (The Band’s VisitWalid).

Two years ago, the world went into lockdown. As the pandemic loomed, many stocked up on disinfectant, masks, and hand sanitizer. Sara Lea Miller added a few other essentials to her shopping list including paint, canvas, and brushes. Though she had never created art before, March of 2020 seemed to her like a good time to start.

“I have taken art history classes, traveled to Europe to see amazing art in college, collected art as an adult and it still took me until I was over 50 years old to start painting,” Miller said.

Without the constraints of tradition or training, Miller explored a variety of media such as acrylic, oil stick, chalk, and more. She developed a self-taught process and builds layer upon layer to her canvases to create luminous depth of color. She often adds splatters that bleed across the surface for dynamic effect and drags lines of oil sticks, pastels, chalk, and charcoal to add movement and contrast.

Miller often works on the floor of her home studio and makes use of unconventional tools such as kitchen scrubbers and yoga mats. She even uses a shop broom as a giant paint brush. While delighting in the unpredictability of the materials, Miller embraces the spontaneity that comes with a process-oriented approach to art making. The result are compositions and color combinations that are unexpected, approachable, and joyful.

Thirty of her artworks are on display from June 15 - August 22, 2022 in person at the Artport Gallery or virtually in COCA’s Online Gallery at cocaonlinegallery.zenfolio.com.

Mary Proctor: I am Just the Messenger
Mary Proctor: I am Just the Messenger is a two-site project organized by the Gadsden Arts Center & Museum and in conjunction with the Tallahassee Museum that presents the artwork of Missionary Mary L. Proctor, a visionary artist who has been making art for the last 25 years. Her work is included in the collections of major U.S. Museums including the Smithsonian, American Visionary Art Museum, Metropolitan Museum of Art, and High Museum of Art.
This exhibition presents Proctor’s special and rarely seen Presidents and First Ladies Series, installed at Gadsden Arts and at the Tallahassee Museum, along with her iconic doors and windows, and a variety of mixed-media art. Work for the exhibition is on loan from the Gadsden Arts Center & Museum Permanent Collection, private collections, and the collection of the artist.
Born to a teenaged mother in Jefferson County, Florida in 1960, Mary Proctor was raised by her grandparents. Like many vernacular and self-taught artists, she can pinpoint the exact moment and reason why she began to paint. In 1994, a fire took the lives of her grandmother, aunt, and uncle. Deeply depressed by her great loss, Proctor found comfort in her Christian faith, and in 1995, Proctor had a vision that told her to get a door and paint. From that day forward, Proctor has taken it upon herself to be a missionary to the world, using doors as passageways to freedom, peace, and comfort, and instilling her paintings with passages from scripture, and glittering angels. She calls herself “Missionary Mary” and uses a myriad of found materials – buttons, sticks, broken pieces of glass, mirrors, plates – to complete her compositions. For Mary, putting together items that are unwanted or broken represents the process of mending.

The Tallahassee Museum is pleased to introduce our newest Guest Animal visiting us for the Summer...Caracals!
Caracals are wild cats that are native to parts of the Middle East, India, Central Asia and Africa. They are medium in size and are characterized by their strong build, short face and distinct long black tufted ears. Their reddish sand-colored fur helps them blend in with their environments making them excellent hunters, especially at night.  Caracals are typically solitary animals but the Tallahassee Museum now has a brother and sister pair on exhibit until fall 2022.

Fishing is one of the largest participant sports in the world and Florida offers many chances for locals and tourists to pursue this popular pastime. Home to one of the longest coastlines in the country as well as abundant lakes, rivers, and streams, Florida’s waters teem with more than 600 species of fish. The Lure of Florida Fishing explores the development of sport fishing in Florida and its continued popularity as a destination for both salt and freshwater anglers.  The exhibit features an extensive timeline of fishing lures that documents a century of lure making in Florida. Other artifacts, photographs, and text panels help interpret the history and growth of sport fishing in the Sunshine State as a tourism draw and recreational activity for residents.

This year, the 34th annual juried exhibition features 94 works of art by 80 regional artists. This exhibition draws visitors and patrons from across the region to enjoy recent art by top artists. New and returning, established and upcoming artists submit work for review by the selection committee, and the resulting exhibition spans virtually all mediums, including watercolor, acrylic, oil, photography, clay, encaustic, wood, metal, glass, and serigraph.
The founders of the Art in Gadsden exhibition, Beth Appleton and David Harbaugh, wanted to bring fine art to Gadsden County, foster the careers of local artists, and draw the community together through this special event. Beginning in 1989, Art in Gadsden was displayed in empty downtown storefronts in Quincy, organized by a dedicated and all volunteer community. This exhibition draws visitors and patrons from across the region each year, and is an exciting opportunity for regional artists to share their work, and for Gadsden Arts to celebrate the creativity within our community.
The juror for the 34th Art in Gadsden is sculptor Mark Dickson. While the Gadsden Arts Exhibition Committee scores and selects the artwork submitted to the exhibition, the juror selects the award winners.

Camp Gordon Johnston WWII Museum in Carrabelle is presenting a special exhibit on the Campaign in North Africa called Operation Torch. This exhibit will be on display at the museum from Tuesday, July 12 until Saturday, September 3.  The museum is open every Tuesday through Saturday from 11 am to 5 pm. There is no charge for admission, but donations are gladly accepted.
Operation Torch (8 Nov 1942) was the first of several campaigns by the Allies in North Africa, the first large Allied invasion in which the American Military participated. It was also the first American Airborne Operation. North Africa saw the rise of the influence of General George Patton, and his innovative use of armor. Although we consider the June 6, 1944 Normandy Invasion as the iconic amphibious operation, these tactics were already in use in North Africa, and the First Engineers Special Brigade, which was deployed before Camp Gordon Johnston was fully operational, included one unit from the camp, the 61st Medical.
Camp Gordon Johnston WWII Museum is located at 1873 Hwy 98 West, directly across from the very beach where the beach assault training occurred in 1942-1943. Carrabelle Beach was the site of many practice beach assault landings. For more information, contact Camp Gordon Johnston Museum at (850) 697-8575 or museum@campgordonjohnston.com. Funded in part by the Franklin County Tourist Development Council.
