[more+]The Carrabelle History Museum is proud to present a featured exhibit, “Foundations of Freedom - Carrabelle’s Role in America’s Story” made possible by a grant from the Duke Energy Foundation. This exhibit will officially open on Saturday, July 4 and be on display until September 30, with sneak preview opportunities available on July 2 and 3. This unique exhibit, in honor of America’s 250th birthday, tells the story of Carrabelle’s history, independence, democratic participation, and civic identity through artifacts, photographs, and stories. Visitors can explore this exhibit on Wednesdays from 12 to 5 pm ET, Thursdays through Saturdays from 10 am to 5 pm ET, and Sundays from 12 to 5 pm ET. Admission is free, with donations warmly welcomed.
The exhibit is supported in part through the Duke Energy Foundation’s America250 grant initiative, which helps communities commemorate America’s upcoming 250th anniversary. Through this initiative, the Duke Energy Foundation is investing in projects that inspire civic pride, strengthen communities, and celebrate the nation’s history.
Through stories of Carrabelle’s mayors through time along with original artifacts, large-scale historic photographs and interpretive signage, the exhibit highlights how democracy functioned at the grassroots level and showcases civic leadership across generations. This project preserves and displays civic artifacts, provides free access to historical education for residents and visitors, and strengthens civic pride in Carrabelle’s role in America’s democratic journey.
Other highlights of the exhibit include original ballot boxes, paper ballots from 1909 and several periods of the 20th century, 1940s municipal court log books, city clerk journals, and founding documents. These artifacts reveal how citizens voted, resolved disputes, and organized local government, demonstrating how engaged citizens and elected officials helped shape the history of Carrabelle and Florida’s Forgotten Coast. Families and young visitors can also enjoy America250 activities, including patriotic coloring sheets and word searches.
Housed inside Carrabelle’s historic City Hall and using the very room where the justice of the peace, municipal court, city commission, and mayors once governed, the exhibit uses the building itself as both artifact and backdrop. The exhibit brings Carrabelle’s founding story and civic heritage to life inside the room where local democracy unfolded for decades.

[more+]We invite you to the exhibition “Friendly Arbitration: Honoré Daumier on Crime, Justice, and Punishment” on view at MoFA until Saturday, December 12. Friendly Arbitration examines Honoré Daumier’s (1808–1879) subversive use of lithography and wood engraving as tools for artistic innovation and social critique in nineteenth-century France. Bringing together original prints from his popular series on lawyers, the legal system, and crime and punishment, the exhibition explores how his satirical caricatures challenged judicial authority, exposed social inequities, and helped reshape the fields of art and journalism.

[more+]Richard Bickel is an award‑winning American photographer and photojournalist whose career spans more than 70 countries and includes features in many of the world’s leading publications. Drawn to the rhythms of life along great rivers—from Africa’s Niger to Burma’s Irrawaddy—Bickel found a deep and lasting connection in Apalachicola, Florida, where he settled in 1994. For three decades, he has documented the culture, character, and working traditions of the Gulf Coast, discovering in its working waterfront, resilient people, and enduring heritage the same spirit that animated the communities he photographed abroad.
Bickel’s work in Apalachicola is matched by his long‑standing commitment to documenting the everyday lives of Cubans and their ongoing fight for survival. Across borders and cultures, he seeks out the universal threads of joy, survival, perseverance, and human dignity.
In No Borders, Bickel brings these worlds together. This exhibition explores the shared depths and striking similarities among the people of Apalachicola, Cuba, and communities across the globe. Through his lens, viewers witness how joy, struggle, and the will to endure transcend geography—revealing a humanity that knows no boundaries.
His photographs have appeared in The New York Times, Newsweek, Condé Nast Traveler, Travel + Leisure, Die Zeit, The Times of London, and on Italian Public Television. He is the author of the best‑selling photo books The Last Great Bay and Apalachicola, An American Treasure, both considered definitive visual portraits of the region. Bickel’s honors include a 2023 Emmy Award, the Golden Quill for photography, and the New York Art Directors Club Award. His work has been exhibited in galleries throughout the United States.

Born in Fajardo, Puerto Rico, Thornton discovered his love of painting in his youth, guided by his mother, who inspired him to create and cultivated his passion for the arts. After setting aside painting to build a career and raise a family, Thornton rediscovered his passion for painting. His paintings span portraits of both iconic figures and people from his everyday life, animals, and vibrant landscapes, all unified by his expressive use of color, attention to form, and deep interest in storytelling.

[more+]Born in Fajardo, Puerto Rico, Thornton discovered his love of painting in his youth, guided by his mother, who inspired him to create and cultivated his passion for the arts. After setting aside painting to build a career and raise a family, Thornton rediscovered his passion for painting. He has called Tallahassee home for over 40 years, and the show reflects that through decades of his work spanning Florida landscapes, wildlife, portraits, and paintings of his family.
The exhibit runs September 25 through December 12, with an opening reception on September 25 from 5 to 7 PM.

[more+]The Florida A&M University Foster-Tanner Fine Arts Gallery is excited to invite you to experience our new art exhibition, Marilyn Proctor-Givens: Exploration of a Process. This exhibition will feature a collection of works by celebrated artist and art educator Marilyn Proctor-Givens. Proctor-Givens' featured artwork spans four decades and showcases her exploration of media and processes, including graphic design, photography, glass, wood, fabric, leather, filament, and ceramics. Her ceramic forms use both traditional and Raku firing techniques, bringing together traditional ceramic forms like vessels and platters, and her trademark sculptural forms, including distinctive haloed masks and jigsaw puzzle pieces embossed forms. Many of Proctor-Givens' works draw upon family, culture, religion, and travel. Through her hand, many techniques, materials, and processes are showcased, revealing the ultimate connections made with people, places and things.

[more+]Camp Gordon Johnston WWII Museum in Carrabelle is presenting a special exhibit on Operation Market Garden. This exhibit will be on display at the museum from Tuesday, September 1 until Saturday, October 3. The museum is open every Tuesday through Saturday from 11 am to 5 pm ET. There is no charge for admission, but donations are gladly accepted.
Operation Market Garden (September 17th - 27th, 1944) was the attempt to establish control of the bridge over the Rhine at Arnhem on the border of Germany and the Netherlands. This involved the combined efforts of the First Allied Airborne and the XXX Corps of the British 2nd Army. The battle was unsuccessful for a variety of reasons, including the dependence on a single raised highway the ground forces had to use to link up with airborne troops (US, British and Polish) dropped at the three bridges.
This exhibit presents the military commanders from both the Allied and the German forces, and presents information of the Horsa and Waco gliders, as well as the Douglas C47 Skytrain aircraft used to bring troops and equipment from England.
The battle was commemorated in “A Bridge Too Far”, the 1977 film. “Band of Brothers”, a miniseries from HBO in 2001, also depicted the 101st Airborne's part in this battle. They landed near Eindhoven and Veghel.
Camp Gordon Johnston WWII Museum is located at 1873 Hwy 98 West, directly across from the very beach where the beach assault training occurred in 1942-1943. [more+]The Crooked River Lighthouse continues to host its popular Country Farmers Markets on the 1st and 3rd Saturdays of each month from 9 am to 1 pm ET at the foot of Carrabelle’s historic lighthouse. These lively markets are the perfect chance to shop small, shop local, and discover unique gifts and tasty treats while supporting regional vendors, artists, bakers, artisans, and crafters. The lighthouse is located at 1975 Hwy 98 West, Carrabelle, FL.
Market-goers can stroll through the lighthouse grounds and browse an ever-changing variety of locally sourced and handcrafted items. Guests will find unique items like coastal décor, photography and art, jewelry, woven baskets, totes and bags, keychains, and cozy knit beanies and hats perfect for evenings. Shoppers can explore organic, farm-fresh produce and eggs, grass-fed beef, batch-roasted coffee, starter plants, along with rich local honey and cane syrup, and homemade seasonal jellies, hot sauces and salsas. Visitors can also discover soothing soaps, candles, natural balms, and sprays, as well as local books, note cards, tumblers, and keepsakes. Treats like artisan breads, cinnamon or caramel rolls, cookies, cakes, and candied nuts are sure to be a favorite.
Visitors are encouraged to extend their visit by exploring the free Keeper’s House Museum, which houses the historic Fresnel lens, and by browsing the lighthouse gift shop, open from 9 am to 5 pm ET. The shop offers an array of handcrafted items, jewelry, coastal art, nautical décor, souvenirs, and keepsakes. For those seeking a little extra adventure, a climb to the top of the lighthouse rewards guests with a breathtaking panoramic view of St. George Sound (small fee applies).

[more+]"Swamp Buddha Sumi-e - Old Friends New Brush Strokes" opens at Jefferson Arts Gallery Saturday September 5.
For more than three decades the Swamp Buddhas have met on Saturday mornings focused on the ancient art of sumi-e, a Japanese word that means “ink painting.” Their tools are brushes with bristles made from animal hair, water, and ink to begin. Later, color may be added to their creations. In earlier stages, students practice bamboo, wild orchid, chrysanthemum, and plum blossom. This meditative art asks the artist to breathe and focus, much like Buddha sitting under the fig tree or an anhinga in the swamp drying its wings. The artist wets the brush, adds ink, and paints strokes on paper that bleeds. What appears to be a simple production is actually challenging.

[more+]On Saturday, September 19, from 10:00 am to 12:00 pm, join us for our Fall Family Fun Day. We will host a children’s book reading of “Big Dance” by Aoife Greenham, followed by a fun dance performance. Afterward, hang out for refreshments and drop-in tours of our current exhibitions.
“Big Dance” was written and illustrated by Aoife Greenham. It follows Pippa as she watches her friends express themselves through dance and learns how she, too, can express herself with her own special dance moves.
During this reading and dance activity, kids and parents will have a chance to connect with one of our current exhibits on display: “Floating Metal: UNDERcurrents In My Father’s Garden.” In which nia love engages with her father Ed Love’s artistic legacy as a major sculptor of the Black Arts generation, this newest iteration reckons with the vexed matter of inheritance in Afro-diasporic history.
This event is for visitors 16 and under and their families. All materials will be provided, and free parking will be available in the Call St Garage.

[more+]The Carrabelle History Museum is proud to present a featured exhibit, “Foundations of Freedom - Carrabelle’s Role in America’s Story” made possible by a grant from the Duke Energy Foundation. This exhibit will officially open on Saturday, July 4 and be on display until September 30, with sneak preview opportunities available on July 2 and 3. This unique exhibit, in honor of America’s 250th birthday, tells the story of Carrabelle’s history, independence, democratic participation, and civic identity through artifacts, photographs, and stories. Visitors can explore this exhibit on Wednesdays from 12 to 5 pm ET, Thursdays through Saturdays from 10 am to 5 pm ET, and Sundays from 12 to 5 pm ET. Admission is free, with donations warmly welcomed.
The exhibit is supported in part through the Duke Energy Foundation’s America250 grant initiative, which helps communities commemorate America’s upcoming 250th anniversary. Through this initiative, the Duke Energy Foundation is investing in projects that inspire civic pride, strengthen communities, and celebrate the nation’s history.
Through stories of Carrabelle’s mayors through time along with original artifacts, large-scale historic photographs and interpretive signage, the exhibit highlights how democracy functioned at the grassroots level and showcases civic leadership across generations. This project preserves and displays civic artifacts, provides free access to historical education for residents and visitors, and strengthens civic pride in Carrabelle’s role in America’s democratic journey.
Other highlights of the exhibit include original ballot boxes, paper ballots from 1909 and several periods of the 20th century, 1940s municipal court log books, city clerk journals, and founding documents. These artifacts reveal how citizens voted, resolved disputes, and organized local government, demonstrating how engaged citizens and elected officials helped shape the history of Carrabelle and Florida’s Forgotten Coast. Families and young visitors can also enjoy America250 activities, including patriotic coloring sheets and word searches.
Housed inside Carrabelle’s historic City Hall and using the very room where the justice of the peace, municipal court, city commission, and mayors once governed, the exhibit uses the building itself as both artifact and backdrop. The exhibit brings Carrabelle’s founding story and civic heritage to life inside the room where local democracy unfolded for decades.

[more+]We invite you to the exhibition “Friendly Arbitration: Honoré Daumier on Crime, Justice, and Punishment” on view at MoFA until Saturday, December 12. Friendly Arbitration examines Honoré Daumier’s (1808–1879) subversive use of lithography and wood engraving as tools for artistic innovation and social critique in nineteenth-century France. Bringing together original prints from his popular series on lawyers, the legal system, and crime and punishment, the exhibition explores how his satirical caricatures challenged judicial authority, exposed social inequities, and helped reshape the fields of art and journalism.

[more+]The Carrabelle History Museum is proud to present a featured exhibit, “Foundations of Freedom – Carrabelle’s Role in America’s Story” made possible by a grant from the Duke Energy Foundation. This exhibit will be on display from Saturday, July 4 through Wednesday, September 30. This unique exhibit, in honor of America’s 250th birthday, tells the story of Carrabelle’s history, independence, democratic participation, and civic identity through artifacts, photographs, and stories. Visitors can explore this exhibit on Wednesdays from 12 to 5 pm ET, Thursdays through Saturdays from 10 am to 5 pm ET, and Sundays from 12 to 5 pm ET. Admission is free, with donations warmly welcomed.
The exhibit is supported in part through the Duke Energy Foundation’s America250 grant initiative, which helps communities commemorate America’s upcoming 250th anniversary. Through this initiative, the Duke Energy Foundation is investing in projects that inspire civic pride, strengthen communities, and celebrate the nation’s history.
Through stories of Carrabelle’s mayors through time along with original artifacts, large-scale historic photographs and interpretive panels, the exhibit highlights how democracy functioned at the grassroots level and showcases civic leadership across generations. This project preserves and displays civic artifacts, provides free access to historical education for residents and visitors, and strengthens civic pride in Carrabelle’s role in America’s democratic journey.
Other highlights of the exhibit include original ballot boxes, 1913 paper ballots, 1940s municipal court log books, city clerk journals, and founding documents. These artifacts reveal how citizens voted, resolved disputes, and organized local government, demonstrating how engaged citizens and elected officials helped shape the history of Carrabelle and Florida’s Forgotten Coast.
Housed inside the historic Carrabelle City Hall and using the very room where the justice of the peace, municipal court, city commission, and mayors once governed, the exhibit uses the building itself as both artifact and backdrop. The exhibit brings Carrabelle’s founding story and civic heritage to life inside the room where local democracy unfolded for decades.

[more+]Richard Bickel is an award‑winning American photographer and photojournalist whose career spans more than 70 countries and includes features in many of the world’s leading publications. Drawn to the rhythms of life along great rivers—from Africa’s Niger to Burma’s Irrawaddy—Bickel found a deep and lasting connection in Apalachicola, Florida, where he settled in 1994. For three decades, he has documented the culture, character, and working traditions of the Gulf Coast, discovering in its working waterfront, resilient people, and enduring heritage the same spirit that animated the communities he photographed abroad.
Bickel’s work in Apalachicola is matched by his long‑standing commitment to documenting the everyday lives of Cubans and their ongoing fight for survival. Across borders and cultures, he seeks out the universal threads of joy, survival, perseverance, and human dignity.
In No Borders, Bickel brings these worlds together. This exhibition explores the shared depths and striking similarities among the people of Apalachicola, Cuba, and communities across the globe. Through his lens, viewers witness how joy, struggle, and the will to endure transcend geography—revealing a humanity that knows no boundaries.
His photographs have appeared in The New York Times, Newsweek, Condé Nast Traveler, Travel + Leisure, Die Zeit, The Times of London, and on Italian Public Television. He is the author of the best‑selling photo books The Last Great Bay and Apalachicola, An American Treasure, both considered definitive visual portraits of the region. Bickel’s honors include a 2023 Emmy Award, the Golden Quill for photography, and the New York Art Directors Club Award. His work has been exhibited in galleries throughout the United States.

After setting aside painting to build a career and raise a family, Thornton rediscovered his passion for painting. He has called Tallahassee home for over 40 years, and the show reflects that through decades of his work spanning Florida landscapes, wildlife, portraits, and paintings of his family.
The exhibit runs September 25 through December 12, with an opening reception on September 25 from 5 to 7 PM.

[more+]The Florida A&M University Foster-Tanner Fine Arts Gallery is excited to invite you to experience our new art exhibition, Marilyn Proctor-Givens: Exploration of a Process. This exhibition will feature a collection of works by celebrated artist and art educator Marilyn Proctor-Givens. Proctor-Givens' featured artwork spans four decades and showcases her exploration of media and processes, including graphic design, photography, glass, wood, fabric, leather, filament, and ceramics. Her ceramic forms use both traditional and Raku firing techniques, bringing together traditional ceramic forms like vessels and platters, and her trademark sculptural forms, including distinctive haloed masks and jigsaw puzzle pieces embossed forms. Many of Proctor-Givens' works draw upon family, culture, religion, and travel. Through her hand, many techniques, materials, and processes are showcased, revealing the ultimate connections made with people, places and things.

[more+]Camp Gordon Johnston WWII Museum in Carrabelle is presenting a special exhibit on Operation Market Garden. This exhibit will be on display at the museum from Tuesday, September 1 until Saturday, October 3. The museum is open every Tuesday through Saturday from 11 am to 5 pm ET. There is no charge for admission, but donations are gladly accepted.
Operation Market Garden (September 17th - 27th, 1944) was the attempt to establish control of the bridge over the Rhine at Arnhem on the border of Germany and the Netherlands. This involved the combined efforts of the First Allied Airborne and the XXX Corps of the British 2nd Army. The battle was unsuccessful for a variety of reasons, including the dependence on a single raised highway the ground forces had to use to link up with airborne troops (US, British and Polish) dropped at the three bridges.
This exhibit presents the military commanders from both the Allied and the German forces, and presents information of the Horsa and Waco gliders, as well as the Douglas C47 Skytrain aircraft used to bring troops and equipment from England.
The battle was commemorated in “A Bridge Too Far”, the 1977 film. “Band of Brothers”, a miniseries from HBO in 2001, also depicted the 101st Airborne's part in this battle. They landed near Eindhoven and Veghel.
Camp Gordon Johnston WWII Museum is located at 1873 Hwy 98 West, directly across from the very beach where the beach assault training occurred in 1942-1943. These lively markets are the perfect chance to shop small, shop local, and discover unique gifts and tasty treats while supporting regional vendors, artists, bakers, artisans, and crafters. The lighthouse is located at 1975 Hwy 98 West, Carrabelle, FL.
Market-goers can stroll through the lighthouse grounds and browse an ever-changing variety of locally sourced and handcrafted items. Guests will find unique items like coastal décor, photography and art, jewelry, woven baskets, totes and bags, keychains, and cozy knit beanies and hats perfect for evenings. Shoppers can explore organic, farm-fresh produce and eggs, grass-fed beef, batch-roasted coffee, starter plants, along with rich local honey and cane syrup, and homemade seasonal jellies, hot sauces and salsas. Visitors can also discover soothing soaps, candles, natural balms, and sprays, as well as local books, note cards, tumblers, and keepsakes. Treats like artisan breads, cinnamon or caramel rolls, cookies, cakes, and candied nuts are sure to be a favorite.
Visitors are encouraged to extend their visit by exploring the free Keeper’s House Museum, which houses the historic Fresnel lens, and by browsing the lighthouse gift shop, open from 9 am to 5 pm ET. The shop offers an array of handcrafted items, jewelry, coastal art, nautical décor, souvenirs, and keepsakes. For those seeking a little extra adventure, a climb to the top of the lighthouse rewards guests with a breathtaking panoramic view of St. George Sound (small fee applies).

[more+]"Swamp Buddha Sumi-e - Old Friends New Brush Strokes" opens at Jefferson Arts Gallery Saturday September 5.
For more than three decades the Swamp Buddhas have met on Saturday mornings focused on the ancient art of sumi-e, a Japanese word that means “ink painting.” Their tools are brushes with bristles made from animal hair, water, and ink to begin. Later, color may be added to their creations. In earlier stages, students practice bamboo, wild orchid, chrysanthemum, and plum blossom. This meditative art asks the artist to breathe and focus, much like Buddha sitting under the fig tree or an anhinga in the swamp drying its wings. The artist wets the brush, adds ink, and paints strokes on paper that bleeds. What appears to be a simple production is actually challenging.

[more+]On Saturday, September 19, from 10:00 am to 12:00 pm, join us for our Fall Family Fun Day. We will host a children’s book reading of “Big Dance” by Aoife Greenham, followed by a fun dance performance. Afterward, hang out for refreshments and drop-in tours of our current exhibitions.
“Big Dance” was written and illustrated by Aoife Greenham. It follows Pippa as she watches her friends express themselves through dance and learns how she, too, can express herself with her own special dance moves.
During this reading and dance activity, kids and parents will have a chance to connect with one of our current exhibits on display: “Floating Metal: UNDERcurrents In My Father’s Garden.” In which nia love engages with her father Ed Love’s artistic legacy as a major sculptor of the Black Arts generation, this newest iteration reckons with the vexed matter of inheritance in Afro-diasporic history.
This event is for visitors 16 and under and their families. All materials will be provided, and free parking will be available in the Call St Garage.
