These are the selections of music featured: Come To Me by Dan Forrest, Sing Out, My Soul by Marques L. A. Garrett (a recent graduate of FSU School of Music), You Do Not Walk Alone by Elaine Hagenberg. Like A River In My Soul arranged by Tim Osiek and Shalom by Dan Forrest. You can watch and listen to this virtual concert at https://youtu.be/j27ly3KYGTg. Another way to find the concert is by searching Youtube for Tallahassee Civic Chorale. It is currently the first video on the site.

We hope you enjoy our virtual spring concert and share it with your friends. We also ask you to be on the lookout for our virtual summer concert, entitled Out of the Darkness, which should launch about the end of July. This short concert will have two choral pieces, For We Wish You Music and Why We Sing. It will also include a piano solo by our accompanist Dr. Jim Amend and an original ==song created and sung by the VanLandingham family: father John and daughters Amanda and Jackie. If you have attended our previous summer concerts, you will know what a treat you have to look forward to with these featured performers! Once described as a young professional tennis prodigy, Thomas (Cesar-winner Alex Lutz) never had the career in the game he had hoped for. At 37, he decides to return to the French Open at Rolland Garros, in spite of his declining physical fitness and shattered knee. Although his wife Eve (Ana Girardot) and mother Judith (Oscar-nominee Kirstin Scott Thomas) advise him to give up on his unlikely ambition, Thomas obsessively perseveres. He will have to face his own demons as well as the intense competitive qualifying rounds to reach the tournament and eventually face a young tennis genius who disturbingly reminds him of his younger self. 2020. Mariel (María Villar) wants to play the role of Isabella in a local theater troupe's production of Shakespeare's Measure for Measure, but money problems prevent her from preparing for the audition. She thinks of asking her brother for financial help, but is worried about being too direct. Her solution is to ask her brother's girlfriend, Luciana (Agustina Muñoz), also an actress and a more self-assured one, to convince her brother to give her the money. Luciana agrees on the condition that Mariel will not abandon her acting and continue to prepare for the part of Isabella. The latest in Matías Piñeiro's series of films inspired by the women of Shakespeare is his most structurally daring and visually stunning work to date. The intimacy he has built with his lead actors has never been more deeply felt than in these performances from Muñoz and Villar. Isabella is a film about the ongoing battle between doubt and ambition that never discounts the possibility of a new beginning. 2020. Argentina (English subtitles). 80 minutes. Not rated.

Broadway was on the verge of bankruptcy in the 70s with talk of tearing down theaters and replacing them with parking lots; the plays were considered obsolete and audiences severely declining. On Broadway shows how, thanks to innovative work, a new attention to inclusion and the sometimes-uneasy balance between art and commerce, an industry on the verge of extinction managed to reinvent itself and come back stronger. Legends of the stage and screen take us behind the scenes of Broadway’s most groundbreaking and beloved shows, from “A Chorus Line” to “Hamilton.” The film is chock full of clips that will make audiences want to jump out of their seats and sing, and offers a hurly-burly ride through Times Square. At a moment when New York City is facing an uncertain path forward in its recovery from a devastating pandemic, this fascinating and hugely enjoyable documentary shows how Broadway led the way in the city’s last great rebirth and provides a model of how it can come back again. Curtains up! 2019. America. 82 minutes. Not rated.

Their routine is shaken when Vika’s health deteriorates rapidly. Asia must step in and become the mother Vika so desperately needs. Local artist Quia Z Atkinson likes to go with the flow, thanks largely to her nomadic upbringing. Raised in a military family, she has lived in Morocco, Norway, Illinois, Pennsylvania, New York, South Carolina, Virginia, and, finally, Tallahassee. As a child, she embraced change and the diverse cultures she encountered have influenced her creative process.

Atkinson’s artwork is an extension of her global background and it expresses her desire for constant movement. She works on both canvas and wood panel. Using a mixture of a resin and acrylic with embellishments of glass and crystals, Atkinson’s artworks focus on fluidity.

“Once the resin and paint start to flow, I have no choice but to follow it wherever it leads me,” Atkinson said. “Resin is a fickle creature, comprised of two elements mixed together. It takes a certain finesse with many factors coming together perfectly. The weather, heat application, and time all play a crucial role in the final outcome.”

Her creations often include a three-dimensional aspect with layers of translucency and depth of color offering new surprises when viewed at different angles and light levels. Atkinson is constantly challenging herself and enjoys experimenting with new techniques. She founded an online space, QZ Design Gallery, and she’s earned recognition and accolades for her exuberant artworks.

This exhibition will be on view at the Artport Gallery through Nov. 8. Please wear a mask and practice social distancing when visiting the gallery. To see a digital version of this exhibit, visit COCA’s Online Gallery at cocaonlinegallery.zenfolio.com.

Through nearly 50 posters advertising Napoleon movies to international audiences, this exhibition looks at a small segment of cultural ephemera that speaks volumes about the formation of national identities during the tumultuous years of 1908-1989.

The Florida Humanities Council and the Smithsonian Museum have selected the Apalachicola Arsenal Museum to host the prestigious MoMs exhibit "Water/Ways".  Our world is made of water and, so are we.   Water/Ways is an exhibition that takes a deep look at this essential component of life on our planet, which powers the environment's engine, impacts climate and helps shape and sculpt the landscape.  Humans and animals rely on water for health, hydration, food supplies and hygiene.  Americans are connected to water in ways they may not always realize.  Water connects everyone. The exhibit includes interactive activities as well as descriptive ways water is utilized by our world.  In addition to the Smithsonian, a photography exhibit on the Apalachicola River Area has been provided by award-winning photographer, Clyde Butcher.   Along with this display are stories from local individuals in the "Our Water, Our Lives" exhibit as well as over 50 hand-painted wooden water drops designed by artists from throughout Leon and Gadsden County.  The Water Drop Project allows for bidding on each of the amazing artworks created on the theme of "water". The Apalachicola Arsenal Museum is located at 1071 Pecan Lane, Chattahoochee, on the grounds of Florida State Hospital.  The Museum is open from Tuesday-Thursday from 10-3 and on Saturday from 10-3.  Admission is free.  Masks are required.  The exhibit runs from August 28 through October 23.   Events scheduled around the exhibit can be found on the Apalachicola Arsenal Museum Historical Society Facebook page. The FAMU Foster-Tanner Fine Arts Gallery in association with the Everett Spruill Foundation for the Arts is pleased to present The Art of Jazz; artworks by Orlando-based artist Everett Spruill. Art of Jazz features mixed media collages and paintings highlighting jazz musicians and the spirit of the legendary music genres. We are proud to present this exhibition because Florida A&M University has a distinguished musical history with dynamic faculty and alumni heralding from our Department of Music. The jazz genre, in particular, has primed several acclaimed musicians from FAMU. Spruill's, The Art of Jazz encompasses portraits of jazz greats as well as lesser-known contributors to the genre.

ABOUT THE ARTIST Everett Spruill was born in Birmingham, Alabama, and attended Berea College where he studied Business. He started his career in hotel management in Miami and began creating art at this time. From the mid-1990s to 2010, Spruill created a large body of work that responded in a general way to the childlike simplicity of creating art. During this time, the increasingly abstract collages of Spruill's paintings gave way to a multitude of materials from electronic components, textiles, recycled wallpaper, and decorative architectural elements. To create these works, the artist uses appropriated materials and digital technologies. In 2017, Spruill began making wire sculptures for public spaces and developing architectural projects. Still residing in Orlando Florida with his many accolades, Everett Spruill prints and paintings are most famous for his work in the areas of collage and cubist abstraction. (Text taken from everett-spruill.com) The Art of Jazz will be open to the public from August 30 – October 30, 2021. Visitors are welcome to visit the gallery Tuesday - Friday, from 10:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m., Saturdays, from 11:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m., or by appointment.

Due to health concerns around the delta variant, we will not have an opening reception. Admission is free and open to the public. For more information contact the gallery at (850) 599-8755 or fostertannergallery@famu.edu

Dawn McMillan: Captured Moments September 11 - December 11, 2021 Opening on Saturday September 11 in the Munroe Family Community Gallery is a series of paintings and drawings by Dawn McMillan titled Captured Moments. In this exhibition, McMillan moves away from past figurative and narrative work to explore landscapes centered on fleeting moments of light and circumstance. Whether it’s the sunset after a storm that bathes everything in a golden glow, or the stillness of deep, dark reflections on a pond at twilight, all scenes are meant to evoke a feeling of peace, serenity and awe. This series of paintings and drawings began at the start of the pandemic and continued throughout a year of isolation and a time of focus on nature and the briefness of a perfectly lit scene.

2019. America. 82 minutes. Not rated.

What is it about the rise and fall of this particular figure that filmmakers and audiences in the 20th century found so fascinating? Through nearly 50 posters advertising Napoleon movies to international audiences, this exhibition looks at a small segment of cultural ephemera that speaks volumes about the formation of national identities during the tumultuous years of 1908-1989.

In 2016, members of the Standing Rock Indian Reservation initiated a grass roots protest of the Dakota Access Pipeline, infrastructure that would transport oil across the Midwest and endanger the reservation’s clean water source. Photographs, prints, paintings and graphic design elements from the protest spread around the world, and the project was officially abandoned in 2021. This exhibition explores the key roles artists have taken in contextualizing access to water as a human and civil right, from the Middle Passage to Flint, Michigan. Artists in this exhibition include Andrea Carlson, Jim Denomie, Heid E. Erdrich, Courtney M. Leonard, Cannupa Hanska Luger, Pope.L, Calida Garcia Rawles, and Sarah Sense.

A Shared Body - In 2016, members of the Standing Rock Indian Reservation initiated a grass roots protest of the Dakota Access Pipeline, infrastructure that would transport oil across the Midwest and endanger the reservation’s clean water source.

Napoleon at the Movies - Napoleon Bonaparte has been featured in more films than any other character in history.

Social Distance - During quarantine, Linda Hall and Becki Rutta documented the impact of the pandemic on Tallahassee through a series of performances and interventions in local malls, parks, and other shared spaces. This exhibition includes masks, photographs, and video from this ongoing project.
