The Winter Festival Youth Art Exhibition 2021 showcases youthful talent and imagination through nearly 100 pieces of student artwork. Forty-seven elementary, middle and high school art teachers submitted work on behalf of their students for the exhibition. The entries represent 34 different area public, private and charter schools. The dedication and professionalism of our area art teachers is evident in the quality of the student artwork on display and the exhibition is stunning. The works can be seen in person at the City Hall Gallery or virtually in COCA’s Online Gallery at cocaonlinegallery.zenfolio.com.

The works can be seen in person at the City Hall Gallery (open M-F from 8-5) or virtually in COCA’s Online Gallery from Nov. 17, 2021- Feb. 7, 2022.

Through a partnership grant with the Florida Division of Arts and Culture and the National Endowment for the Arts, COCA will provide a stipend to each participating art teacher for use in their classrooms.

For more than 30 years, the Council on Culture & Arts (COCA) has partnered with the City of Tallahassee’s Parks and Recreation Department to present the Winter Festival Youth Art Exhibition. It is one of a dozen exhibitions curated by COCA and is part of the City of Tallahassee’s Art in Public Places program.

Anne hasn’t been the same since the jump. While skydiving for her best friend Sara’s bachelorette party, the 27-year-old felt focused, free, above it all. Back on the ground, the pressures of her daily life threaten to overwhelm her. Her coworkers at the daycare center are constantly questioning the way she connects with the children. At Sara’s wedding, she meets a nice guy named Matt, but she can’t help bringing him into ever-more-awkward social situations. As the stressful circumstances mount, Anne prepares for another jump. An electrifying pairing of two of the brightest young stars in cinema in director Kazik Radwanski (Tower, How Heavy This Hammer) and rising talent Deragh Campbell (I Used to Be Darker), "Anne at 13,000 ft" reveals a director and star in perfect synch. From a rip-roaring skydive to moments of quiet reverie, Radwanski captures Anne’s experience with an unflinching directness, a volatile mix of Dardenne brothers immediacy and Cassavetes naturalism. And yet even from this privileged vantage point, it’s impossible to predict what Anne will do next.

Léa Seydoux brilliantly holds the center of Bruno Dumont’s unexpected, unsettling new film, which starts out as a satire of the contemporary news media before steadily spiraling out into something richer and darker. Never one to shy away from provoking his viewers, Dumont (The Life of Jesus, NYFF35) casts Seydoux as France de Meurs, a seemingly unflappable superstar TV journalist whose career, homelife, and psychological stability are shaken after she carelessly drives into a young delivery man on a busy Paris street. This accident triggers a series of self-reckonings, as well as a strange romance that proves impossible to shake. A film that teases at redemption while refusing to grant absolution, France is tragicomic and deliciously ambivalent—a very 21st-century treatment of the difficulty of maintaining identity in a corrosive culture.

To reflect on the 500-year anniversary of the Spanish conquest of Mexico in 2021, director Reyes offers a bold hybrid cinema experience exploring the brutal legacy of colonialism in contemporary Mexico. Through the eyes of a ghostly conquistador, the film recreates Hérnan Cortés' epic journey from the coasts of Veracruz to the Aztec capital of Tenochtitlan, the site of contemporary Mexico City. As the anachronistic fictional character interacts with real-life victims of Mexico's failed drug wars and indigenous communities in resistance, the filmmaker portrays the country's current humanitarian crisis as part of a vicious and unfinished colonial project, still in motion, nearly five hundred years later. Provocative, unique, and strikingly cinematic, "499" mixes non-fictional and performative elements with elements of the road movie to show how past traumas continue to affect contemporary reality. While linking these seemingly disparate histories of violence, the film confirms Reyes as one of the most potent voices in American independent cinema.

15-year-old Leshka lives in an isolated village on the Bering Strait. Like most men where he lives, he is a whale hunter. When internet arrives in the village, Leshka becomes infatuated with a webcam model from America - so far away and yet almost close enough to see across the waters of the Strait. Coming of age in the male-dominated whaling community, Leshka's encounter with this mysterious woman awakens in him a desire to find love outside of the confines of his tiny world. He becomes determined to meet her in real life, setting forth on a dangerous adventure across the raging waters of the sea. Featuring stunning photography of the dramatic landscape, and punctuated by off-kilter humor, "there’s an almost fable-like simplicity to this atmospheric coming of age story" (Screen Daily) about the division between two worlds.

[more+]

Artists are often captivated by the siren song of the St. Marks Wildlife Refuge. Local photographer Todd Bertolaet is no exception. In 1987, he began making images of the area with a panorama camera. He captured landscapes, vistas, and waterways of not only the refuge but also of the Hickory Mound Impoundment, about 30 miles southeast of St. Marks on Apalachee Bay. These images, along with several others, led to a celebrated monograph entitled Crescent Rivers published in 1998 by The University Press of Florida.

The 2020 COVID-19 pandemic afforded Bertolaet the opportunity to return to these two places and revisit the forests, ponds, creeks, and hammocks with his panorama camera. Forty of those images are on display in this exhibit. They were all created between October 2020 and April 2021 using a Noblex 35mm panorama camera and Kentmere 400 B&W 35mm film.

To develop the film, Bertolaet used a formula for Agfa Rodinal, a liquid black-and-white film developer, which dates back to 1890s. Since the manufacturer no longer exists, Bertolaet compounded the solution himself. He then scanned the film digitally and used photo editing software to refine the images which he then printed onto Red River Premium Matte 60 lb. paper utilizing an Epson 4800 printer.

Though his process is complex, his images are straightforward and document the natural beauty in our midst. They capture the notion of wandering, exploring uncharted lands, and discovering out of the way places that are unique to our area. These photographs demand careful examination and serve as potent reminders to slow down, observe, and appreciate time in the great outdoors.

About the artist: Todd Bertolaet is a retired professor of photography from The School of Journalism and Graphic Communication at Florida A&M University in Tallahassee, Florida. Among the various grants and fellowships he has received, Todd was awarded a John Simon Guggenheim Foundation Memorial Fellowship along with three Individual Artist Fellowships from The State of Florida, Division of Cultural Affairs. His work is included in several collections and has been exhibited in over two hundred juried, invitational, group and solo exhibitions. Todd has been photographing since 1971.

Making Light Productions is an award-winning theatre-centered performing arts school.  Thanks to our amazing donors, supporters and grant providers, we were able to open our own theatre in Summer 2019... our mission: to provide the highest quality performing arts education to children, teens and adults of all abilities.   The 17-week Spring Semester at Making Light begins Sunday, January 9, and runs through Saturday, May 14. We are closed the week of Spring Break (March 14-20), and that week is not counted in the original 17 weeks of the semester, so it does not have to be made up. All lessons take place on a weekly basis at our Tallahassee studio at 2720 S Blair Stone Road. Private lessons are offered seven days a week and scheduled at the mutual convenience of the student and instructor. Lessons are generally scheduled once per week and you can select 30, 45, or 60 minutes, or we can schedule lessons more frequently during the week. Private lessons can begin at any time in the semester and can focus on any individual instrument -- or a combination.  For instance, we have some students who learn It's SHOWTIME!  All private acting students will perform in our dazzling showcase (exact time/day TBA)! Our highest priority is the health and safety of our students and staff.  To read more about our thorough health and safety protocols, please click here. Private acting lessons are arranged to accommodate the schedule, goals and interests of the individual actor. We have private acting students studying for speeches, monologues, and auditions, students with special needs focusing on social interactions and emotional processing, and students who wish to "catch up" on skills to join an age-level group class. From full Broadway-style shows to straight plays, to acting technique classes and song-and-dance performance groups, our students receive a well-rounded theatre education. Some of our theatre students choose to compete at the annual Access Broadway competition -- where we have taken Best Overall Actor awards for the past four years!

Private music lessons are offered seven days a week and scheduled at the mutual convenience of the student and instructor. Lessons are generally scheduled once per week and you can select 30, 45, or 60 minutes, or we can schedule lessons more frequently during the week. Private lessons can begin at any time in the semester and can focus on any individual instrument -- or a combination.  For instance, we have some students who learn piano or guitar and voice in the same lesson.
All lessons take place on a weekly basis at our Tallahassee studio at 2720 S Blair Stone Road OR students can opt for online lessons, conducted over Zoom. Making Light instructors are very experienced in providing engaging lessons in person or virtually. For more information on our thorough health and safety protocols please click here.
Our music faculty are all professional, experienced musicians (see below) with a firm foundation in teaching music to children of all abilities.
Semi-Private lessons, Duets and Trios, are another option for students who wish to study music with a friend or family member.  For instance, we have had parent-child guitar classes, vocal duets where friends learned a song/dance routine and competed at Access Broadway together (and won!), and trios where parents started all three siblings on the same instrument in the same half-hour lesson. Making Light is flexible on arranging a lesson that works for you.
The 17-week Spring Semester at Making Light begins Sunday, January 9, and runs through Saturday, May 14. We are closed the week of Spring Break (March 14-20), and that week is not counted in the original 17 weeks of the semester, so it does not have to be made up.

Do you have an aspiring pianist at home who's eager to "tickle the ivories?" Piano is a wonderful instrument for any young musician, whether a beginner whose goal is playing "Jingle Bells" by Christmas, an aspiring concert pianist, or a singer/songwriter who wishes to accompany herself on original music. Making Light tailors the piano lesson to fit the musician and that student's learning style.

Private music lessons are offered seven days a week and scheduled at the mutual convenience of the student and instructor. We LOVE to teach kids to sing -- and we're REALLY good at it!  Year after year, our young vocalists bring home top awards, including Best Overall Vocalist, from the Access Broadway musical theatre competition... but even more important than our trophy shelf -- and we love our trophy shelf! -- is our focus on the JOY of singing. Our music faculty are all professional, experienced musicians (see below) with a firm foundation in teaching music to children of all abilities, and every lesson must begin with joy and passion for music.
All lessons take place on a weekly basis at our Tallahassee studio at 2720 S Blair Stone Road where private students will work one-on-one with a private instructor on a variety of styles of music -- from Broadway to jazz to current popular music. At the same time that they expand their repertoire, young vocalists will learn important lessons about good vocal health and technique which will create the foundation of lifelong singing success.
The 17-week Spring Semester at Making Light begins Sunday, January 9, and runs through Saturday, May 14. We are closed the week of Spring Break (March 14-20), and that week is not counted in the original 17 weeks of the semester, so it does not have to be made up.
IT'S SHOWTIME!  All Making Light private vocal students will be invited to perform in our dazzling Winter Showcase in early January 2022 (exact time/date TBA)!

Sunday, January 23rd - “Sanborn Fire Insurance Maps” The Sanborn Company created the majority of fire insurance maps of U.S. urban areas from 1867 until 1961. Maps included 12,000 cities and towns, as well as maps for very small villages, including ones with as few as two hundred inhabitants. Although these maps don’t show owners’ names, genealogists may find a business or house on a Sanborn map and discover something about the structure itself, including its relative position to other houses on the same street or block.

The presentation will be by Mr. Mulcahy - the Reference/Genealogy Librarian for the Lee County Library System (since 1990). He also worked briefly at the Ellen Payne Odom Genealogy Library in Moultrie, GA.

Sharing time/socializing is at 1:30pm and the meeting starts at 2pm.

Please visit talgensoc.com to request the link to register for the Zoom (virtual) meeting. The Zoom link will be emailed to pre-registered attendees about 3 days prior to the meeting.

The story takes place in 17th Century Boston, where young Hester Prynne has been caught committing adultery when she gives birth to a daughter. As her punishment she must wear a scarlet letter “A” on her chest for the rest of her life.
This play is a brilliant, unusual adaptation of the classic novel and has a decidedly contemporary slant. Although set in Puritan times, it deals with issues which make it an almost feminist deconstruction of the novel even as it preserves the familiar story of Hester Prynne, Roger Chillingworth and Arthur Dimmesdale.
Adult language and themes. Parents are strongly cautioned.

Following in the tradition of Antonioni’s "Blowup" or Coppola’s "The Conversation", director Yann Gozlan — and an excellent cast led by the ever-impeccable Pierre Niney — crafts a taut, suspenseful intrigue, unraveling the events behind a tragic incident, this time in the aeronautics industry. Matthieu, a brilliant young black-box analyst with an extraordinarily acute ear is charged with investigating a deadly plane crash. Progressively obsessed by inexplicable evidence that doesn’t add up, and spiraling further and further into the realm of paranoia, he gradually loses credibility at the BEA, the bureau that investigates aviation safety in France. So he’s forced to go rogue, risking both career and life, but determined to uncover the sordid truth.

The works can be seen until March 28, 2022 in person at the Artport Gallery or virtually in COCA’s Online Gallery at cocaonlinegallery.zenfolio.com.

This is one of many rotating exhibitions curated by the Council on Culture & Arts on behalf of the City of Tallahassee as part of the Art in Public Places program. The Artport Gallery itself is located in the Tallahassee International Airport, 3300 Capital Circle SW, and is open daily from 8:00 am until 11:30 pm. The first 30 minutes of parking is free for both the short-term parking lot.

Making Light offers individual and group fine art and craft classes.  Students of all ages are trained in the fundamentals of drawing, painting, sculpting and even animation!  Our art students also help design and create props and sets for our theatre classes.

The 17-week Spring Semester at Making Light begins Sunday, January 9, and runs through Saturday, May 14. We are closed the week of Spring Break (March 14-20), and that week is not counted in the original 17 weeks of the semester, so it does not have to be made up.

All lessons take place on a weekly basis at our Tallahassee studio at 2720 S. Blair Stone Road OR students can opt for online lessons, conducted over Zoom. Making Light art instructors are very experienced in providing engaging art lessons in person or virtually! For more information on our thorough health and safety protocols please click here.

Private lessons can be scheduled to accommodate the schedule of the individual student; we have instructors available for private lessons seven days a week. Private lessons can be tailored to the individual interests, skills and goals of the student. For instance, we have one student focused primarily on drawing Japanese anime-style, while another is pursuing an intensive study of architectural drawing. Click the links to learn more and register.

The Making Light dance department offers classes for all ages and dance abilities, from the youngest beginner to the most experienced competition level dancer. Our experienced staff is committed to offering every student the best possible focused instruction in dance for musical theatre, ballet, jazz and tap. In addition, each of our musical theatre classes has a dance component to their curriculum in those "triple threat" (voice, dance, acting) classes.  Making Light is committed to protecting the health and safety of our students and staff.  For more information on our thorough health and safety protocols please click here. All MLP private dance students will perform in our dazzling showcase (Exact time/day TBA)! In-person or online private dance lessons are arranged to accommodate the schedule, goals and interests of the individual dancer.  For instance, we have private dance students studying choreography for competition solos, students with special needs focusing on coordination and gross motor skill development, and students who wish to "catch up" on dance skills to join an age-level group class. "Duet" and "Trio" lessons can be arranged for small groups and/or siblings who would like to take lessons together.

All lessons take place on a weekly basis at our Tallahassee studio at 2720 S Blair Stone Road.
For more information on our thorough health and safety protocols please click here.
Our music faculty are all professional, experienced musicians (see below) with a firm foundation in teaching music to children of all abilities.
The 17-week Spring Semester at Making Light begins Sunday, January 9, and runs through Saturday, May 14. We are closed the week of Spring Break (March 14-20), and that week is not counted in the original 17 weeks of the semester, so it does not have to be made up.

Private music lessons are offered seven days a week and scheduled at the mutual convenience of the student and instructor. Lessons are generally scheduled once per week and you can select 30, 45, or 60 minutes, or we can schedule lessons more frequently during the week.
