The Florida A&M University Foster-Tanner Fine Arts Gallery is excited to invite you to experience our new art exhibition, Marilyn Proctor-Givens: Exploration of a Process.  This exhibition will feature a collection of works by celebrated artist and art educator Marilyn Proctor-Givens. Proctor-Givens' featured artwork spans four decades and showcases her exploration of media and processes, including graphic design, photography, glass, wood, fabric, leather, filament, and ceramics. Her ceramic forms use both traditional and Raku firing techniques, bringing together traditional ceramic forms like vessels and platters, and her trademark sculptural forms, including distinctive haloed masks and jigsaw puzzle pieces embossed forms. Many of Proctor-Givens' works draw upon family, culture, religion, and travel. Through her hand, many techniques, materials, and processes are showcased, revealing the ultimate connections made with people, places and things.

The community is invited to meet the artist and celebrate the opening at a free reception on Thursday, October 15 from 5 to 7 p.m.

For Donahue, Artifacts of Nature is a journey into the ways early humans looked to nature for inspiration, meaning, and survival. The exhibition grew from her lifelong interest in ancient art and archaeology, as well as her travels to places around the world where she studied the art and artifacts of early civilizations.

Donahue explores a simple but powerful idea: our connection to nature is not new. From the earliest days of human creativity, people have looked to plants, animals, the sea, the earth, and the patterns around them for ideas and inspiration.

The exhibition explores six themes:

She’s for the Birds: Spiritual Symbolism
Seeds of the Universe: Nourishing Our Future
Mother Nature’s Mandala: Symbols of Respect
Blessings from the Sea: Surviving Nature’s Climate
Of the Earth: Making Sense of Our Lives

Artifacts of Nature will be on display Monday through Thursday from 1 to 4 p.m. through December 2. Admission to the gallery and parking on TSC’s campus are free.

Join us for a 6-week drawing workshop with instructor Libby Watson! This class will focus more on composition and drawing what you see rather than drawing from a photograph. Students will continue to learn and utilize the formal language of art and will be expected to learn the use of new tools in this class. Students will learn through class the fundamental differences between, forms shapes and volumes as they pertain to drawing.

We will incorporate color theory, value tints, shades and tones into our drawings adding colored pencil techniques. Whether you choose to use colored pencils for sketches or to create fully rendered drawings you’ll discover many methods and creative possibilities with this versatile medium. Prerequisite: taken drawing classes previously or students who have taken Drawing 101.

Novelist Tom McCarthy, twice shortlisted for the Booker Prize, and the author of Remainder, reads from his new novel, The Rhyl Poster (New York Review Books), which follows a jurist at one of Europe's highest courts who becomes a double agent. Tom McCarthy is a novelist whose work has been translated into more than twenty languages and adapted for cinema, theatre and radio. He is recipient of the Believer Book Award and the inaugural Windham-Campbell Prize for Fiction, an Internationaler Literaturpreis Finalist, and a two-time Booker Prize Finalist. He is also author of the study Tintin and the Secret of Literature, and of the essay collection Typewriters, Bombs, Jellyfish. His new novel, The Rhyl Poster, is published in October 2026. Since 2022 he has held the position of Miller Scholar at the Santa Fe Institute New Mexico. Originally from London, he now holds joint Swedish-British citizenship, and lives in Berlin.

We invite you to the exhibition “Friendly Arbitration: Honoré Daumier on Crime, Justice, and Punishment” on view at MoFA until Saturday, December 12. Friendly Arbitration examines Honoré Daumier’s (1808–1879) subversive use of lithography and wood engraving as tools for artistic innovation and social critique in nineteenth-century France. Bringing together original prints from his popular series on lawyers, the legal system, and crime and punishment, the exhibition explores how his satirical caricatures challenged judicial authority, exposed social inequities, and helped reshape the fields of art and journalism.

Joel Thornton, a Tallahassee-based artist, brings together a vibrant body of work shaped by many years of dedicated practice and ongoing artistic study. Born in Fajardo, Puerto Rico, Thornton discovered his love of painting in his youth, guided by his mother, who inspired him to create and cultivated his passion for the arts. After setting aside painting to build a career and raise a family, Thornton rediscovered his passion for painting. His paintings span portraits of both iconic figures and people from his everyday life, animals, and vibrant landscapes, all unified by his expressive use of color, attention to form, and deep interest in storytelling.

Born in Fajardo, Puerto Rico, Thornton discovered his love of painting in his youth, guided by his mother, who inspired him to create and cultivated his passion for the arts. After setting aside painting to build a career and raise a family, Thornton rediscovered his passion for painting. He has called Tallahassee home for over 40 years, and the show reflects that through decades of his work spanning Florida landscapes, wildlife, portraits, and paintings of his family.

The exhibit runs September 25 through December 12, with an opening reception on September 25 from 5 to 7 PM.

This exhibition presents the America’s Everglades, the most acclaimed body of work by Clyde Butcher, and celebrates the life and legacy of Harry S. Truman, the visionary who dedicated the Everglades National Park and expanded our National Parks system.

Clyde Butcher is one of America’s foremost landscape photographers and a leading voice for environmental conservation in Florida. His accolades include the National Medal of Arts in 2022, the highest honor given to artists and arts patrons by the United States government, and Florida Artists Hall of Fame recognition in 1998, the highest honor given to an artist by the State of Florida.

Through his monumental images of the Florida Everglades, Butcher captures the quiet beauty, mystery, and resilience of one of the nation’s most treasured natural landscapes. His photographs reveal the delicate balance of life within this vast wilderness, inspiring viewers to reflect on the importance of preservation and the enduring relationship between humanity and nature.

This exhibition brings together the work of five distinguished Florida artists,Beth Appleton, Mark Messersmith, Bob Bischoff, Jesse Aaron, and Bessie Harvey, whose work illuminates our evolving relationship with the natural world. Beth Appleton (b. 1949) creates intricate cut-paper assemblages shaped by a lifetime of observing Florida’s shifting landscapes. Mark Messersmith (b. 1955) is known for his vibrant, layered paintings that merge wildlife, lush vegetation, and human impact into dramatic narratives, often extending beyond the canvas with sculptural frames. Bob Bischoff (1950-2023) became known for creating large, public stained-glass installations with his wife Jo Ann Bischoff. Together, these artists’ work forms a compelling exploration of the beauty, fragility, and resilience of the natural world, inviting viewers to reflect on the connections between art, place, and the environment.

Camp Gordon Johnston WWII Museum in Carrabelle is excited to announce a special exhibit honoring Native American Servicemen, opening Tuesday, November 3 and on display until Saturday, November 28. November is National Native American Heritage Month, and the museum salutes their service and sacrifice. The museum is open Tuesday through Saturday, 11 am to 5 pm ET with free admission.

“During World War I and World War II, hundreds of American Indians joined the United States armed forces and used words from their traditional tribal languages as weapons. The United States military asked them to develop secret battle communications based on their languages—and America’s enemies never deciphered the coded messages they sent. “Code Talkers,” as they came to be known after World War II, are twentieth-century American Indian warriors and heroes who significantly aided the victories of the United States and its allies.

The Code Talkers’ role in war required intelligence and bravery. They developed and memorized a special code. They endured some of the most dangerous battles and remained calm under fire. They served proudly, with honor and distinction. Their actions proved critical in several important campaigns, and they are credited with saving thousands of American and allies’ lives.” (Source: The National Museum of the American Indian).

Visitors are invited to learn about the Native American Servicemembers, including members of the Choctaw, Navajo, Cherokee, Pima, Comanche and other nations that served their country in World War II. Guests can discover the story of the Code Talkers, who used their unbreakable code based on their native tongues to help defeat the enemy and the stories of the seven Native American Medal of Honor Recipients from WWII.

The Thomasville History Center's Election Night tradition began in 1993, and 34 years later, we're still cooking!

Join us Tuesday, November 3, for our 34th Annual Pilau Dinner, a longstanding South Georgia community tradition. First introduced to the History Center by Jasper Davis in 1993, this annual fundraiser began as an effort to support renovations to the historic Smith Log House and Kitchen and has since grown into one of the organization's signature community events.

For just $12 per plate, enjoy traditional chicken and rice pilau (pronounced "per-loo"), a savory regional dish seasoned with black pepper and served with coleslaw, sweet pickles, crackers, and dessert.

Drive-thru pickup is available along Jerger Street from 4:30–7:00 p.m. Guests are also invited to enjoy picnic-style dining on the History Center grounds beginning at 5:00 p.m., accompanied by live music from the historic Smith Homestead porch.
