What Should I Do In Tallahassee, Florida?

No matter how long you’ve lived in Tallahassee, there are always new and exciting places to explore. While the city is known for seasonal events and touring entertainment, there are plenty of fun things to do year-round right here in the Capital City. From local businesses to natural wonders and everything in between, here are the hidden gems to add to your Tallahassee bucket list.

Stargazing

Tallahassee Astronomical Society

One of the greatest wonders Tallahassee has to offer actually goes right over residents’ heads! If you know where to go, Tallahassee regularly has incredible views of the night sky, and the Tallahassee Astronomical Society is the perfect group to help you learn more. They’re a society of local amateur astronomers who provide public outreach about astronomy while encouraging observation of the night sky. They also work to reduce light pollution to ensure residents in the city can continue to enjoy seeing the treasures of the night sky for years to come. T

hey host local monthly events where attendees of all ages can take a peek through one of their telescopes and fall in love with astronomy. If you’re looking for the best stargazing sites, the members of TAS can point you in the right direction.

The Wine House

Where hospitality, great food, beer, and (most importantly) wine come together! The Wine House is owned by the German-born Mursch family, and the whole vibe is warm European hospitality. You can stop by and pick up a unique bottle of wine, or visit their upstairs wine bar for small plates and a glass or two. They host regular events including live music (jazz to blues), art exhibitions, comedy nights, beer, and wine tastings.

Lichgate on High Road

Want to feel like you stepped into another world without driving more than 20 minutes? Look no further than Lichgate! Built by FSU English professor Laura Jepsen and named for the gates of medieval England, Lichgate Cottage will have you feeling like you’ve stepped into a fantasy world. A towering Live Oak Tree that dates back to the 1600s sets the scene for the beautiful grounds that include blossoming garden spaces, the historic cottage, and a labyrinth. The grounds are open from dawn to dusk, with cottage tours offered periodically. Learn more and plan your visit on their website.

Appetizers

Little Dinner Series

Known for being one of Tallahassee’s best-kept dining secrets for over 50 years, this is an experience every resident has to try at one point in their Tallahassee tenure. Every semester, Florida State University students in the Dedman College of Hospitality work with professors to create a series of four-course themed dinners. Every element, from the food on your plate to the venue décor, has been masterfully planned by these talented students. If you’re looking to reserve a spot, act quickly. Once tickets go on sale, they almost immediately sell out!

Bear Creek Educational Forest Ravine Trail

Bear Creek Educational Forest is a 492-acre tract of Lake Talquin State Forest. It’s accessed from I-10 via Highway 267, going south 4.8 miles. Here you’ll find a 1.8-mile unpaved hiking trail that is classified as moderately strenuous, with steep inclines. The trail winds through unique foliage and wildlife around a pond. The educational facility also offers free programs for students.

All Things Tea

Tucked away inside Rabbit Creek Market is your ticket to another era. All Things Tea offers a High Tea experience that melds the elegant custom of the British tradition with their own unique charm and character. Infused with whimsy and vintage style, you’ll enjoy a rotating menu of fine teas, served in delicate cups and paired with handcrafted bites, both savory and sweet. With reservation space for up to 24 guests, this quaint spot is designed to feel like a page from a storybook. We’ll save you a scone!

Geocache hidden in a woodsy setting

Geocaching

Ready to turn every day into a scavenger hunt? That’s what’s in store when you start Geocaching. Geocaching has been around for over 26 years, but many people have never heard of it. There are over 3 million cleverly hidden containers called geocaches all over the world, just waiting to be found. Tallahassee has hundreds of secret geocaches placed by residents and businesses all over the city.

This is a free, all-ages activity that you can do anytime, anywhere. All you have to do is download the Geocaching app and follow the coordinates to the closest geocache near you. Once you arrive, you can read the instructions and get to hunting. Some will be large reusable containers; others will be micro canisters the size of your fingernail. You never know what could be hiding inside one either! Users are known to leave trinkets, stickers, and other surprises for fellow Geocachers. The key is to not get spotted by a “muggle” (a.k.a anyone not playing).

The best part of geocaching is you can do it locally and take your fun globally every time you travel.
